Grammy Awards Expand with New Asian Pop and Latin Song Categories
The Grammy Awards are set to expand their recognition of global music with the introduction of five new categories, notably including Best Asian Pop Music Performance and Best Latin Song.
This move by the Recording Academy, which organizes the annual event, aims to foster greater inclusivity within the awards.
This expansion follows a period of increasing international success for artists in these genres.
Earlier this year, Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny made history by becoming the first artist to win the coveted Album of the Year prize for a Spanish-language record.
Additionally, the K-Pop Demon Hunters anthem "Golden" marked the first K-Pop song to win a Grammy for Best Song for Visual Media, highlighting the growing influence of Korean pop music.
Harvey Mason Jr., the chief executive of the Grammys, stated that the decision to add more categories was inspired by feedback from the music community, which expressed a need for more opportunities to celebrate diverse and emerging genres.
The Recording Academy had previously added a number of Korean and Latino artists to its voting panel, a step widely seen as preparation for such an expansion.
For the new Best Latin Song award, tracks will need to be predominantly in the Spanish language.
The Best Asian Pop Music Performance category will encompass various Asian pop genres, including K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop.
Further adjustments include the renaming of the existing R&B performance category to focus on solo acts, and the folk album prize will now specifically recognize contemporary folk.
Eligibility criteria for Best New Artist have also been revised, increasing the number of times a performer can be submitted from three to four.
This change will allow artists like Ravyn Lenae and Ella Langley, who have previously been nominated three times, to be considered again.
These new categories and rule modifications are slated to take effect for the upcoming Grammy Awards ceremony.
