Aaron Sorkin Reveals Why Jesse Eisenberg Won't Return as Mark Zuckerberg in 'Social Reckoning'
Aaron Sorkin has shed light on why Jesse Eisenberg will not be returning to portray Mark Zuckerberg in the upcoming film, *The Social Reckoning*.
Sorkin, who wrote the 2010 Oscar-winning film *The Social Network* and is writing and directing the sequel, shared details in a recent interview with Vanity Fair.
Sorkin reportedly spent three days attempting to convince Eisenberg to reprise the role, feeling that the character "belonged to him" after his Oscar-nominated performance in *The Social Network*.
However, Eisenberg was not swayed.
Sorkin explained that Eisenberg "simply did not want to be conflated with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has his problems with the guy." This sentiment was further illustrated by Eisenberg's discomfort with fans approaching him with "I'm CEO, bitch" business cards to sign.
Last year, Eisenberg himself commented on his decision not to return, stating on the Today show that while his reasons had nothing to do with the quality of the upcoming film, "when you play a character, you feel, at some point, you’ve grown into something else." This development is significant for fans of *The Social Network* who might have expected Eisenberg to return for the sequel.
## Jeremy Strong Steps Into the Role
With Eisenberg's decision, Jeremy Strong has taken on the leading role of Mark Zuckerberg in *The Social Reckoning*.
The film recently released its first trailer.
Sorkin recounted that he first discussed the sequel's script with Eisenberg at the 2025 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, where he also encountered Strong.
It was at this event that Strong reportedly pitched himself for the role should Eisenberg decline.
Sorkin noted Strong's dedication to the character, stating that once filming began, the *Succession* actor "followed his lead.
He showed up on his first day, and when he said ‘good morning’ to me, he was already talking like Mark." *The Social Reckoning*, which also features Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, Betty Gilpin, and Patrick Fischler, is scheduled to hit theaters on October 9.
