The controversy gained traction following an essay by comedian W.

Kamau Bell titled "It Is So Easy To Not Do This," published on his Substack.

Bell specifically called out Bargatze and other public figures he characterized as "nice" white guys for willingly appearing alongside individuals he labeled as "proud fascists." Bell's essay offered direct advice, stating, "Don’t be in a photo with fascists" and suggesting that the easiest way to avoid such situations is to "not go to places where fascists coagulate."

Bell further elaborated on his stance, writing, "If you don’t have a good reason to be hanging out with fascists, then congratulations!

You are now a member of Team Fascism." He also dismissed the idea that attending the event for the fights was a valid excuse, asserting that the White House is currently associated with a "fascist." Bell emphasized that any public figure seen with such individuals must take immediate and active steps to distance themselves, beyond mere statements or social media posts.

Nate Bargatze has not yet publicly addressed the criticism or his attendance at the UFC event.

However, a source close to Bargatze has indicated that his attendance was motivated by his love for UFC, which is reportedly his "favorite sport," and was not intended as a political statement.
