Girl Meets World Producer Recalls Creator's 'Horrible' Treatment of Young Stars
A producer for the Disney Channel series "Girl Meets World" has alleged that the show's creator, Michael Jacobs, was "horrible" to young cast members, leading to tears from stars Sabrina Carpenter and Rowan Blanchard.
This revelation comes from the new documentary "Doc Meets World," which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Frank Pace, a producer on "Girl Meets World," recounted a "never to be forgotten table read" during an interview with Danielle Fishel, who starred in both "Boy Meets World" and its spin-off.
Pace stated that Jacobs "reamed all the young cast" because he felt they "didn't uphold the tradition of 'Boy Meets World,'" resulting in both Rowan Blanchard and Sabrina Carpenter crying.
Fishel, who initially claimed to have blocked out the memory, was reminded of the alleged incident by Pace.
The documentary, which explores the experiences of the "Boy Meets World" cast growing up on set and their return for the spin-off, sheds light on some of the challenges faced behind the scenes.
This account provides insight into the on-set environment for the young actors during the early stages of the show's production.
Rider Strong, who directed 18 episodes of "Girl Meets World," also commented on his relationship with Jacobs in the documentary.
While acknowledging a debt to Jacobs, Strong stated, "I needed to cut him out of my life, let him know that I don't condone his behavior."
Fishel further detailed her own disagreements with Jacobs regarding the show's narrative direction.
She expressed a strong desire for "Girl Meets World" to focus on female friendships rather than romantic relationships, drawing from her own experiences as a young girl.
Fishel recalled telling Jacobs, "If we're going to do a show that's about a 12-year-old girl, I don't want the focus to be about a relationship." Despite Jacobs reportedly assuring her that the true love story would be between the female characters' friendship, the pilot episode depicted the lead character stumbling into a boy's lap.
Fishel eventually became more vocal in her pushback against Jacobs, a stance she noted "did not go over well."
"Doc Meets World" follows Fishel, Will Friedle, and Strong as they reunited for their "Pod Meets World" podcast in 2022, reflecting on their journeys in television.
