Director Brian Duffield Discusses "Whalefall" Filming Challenges and Austin Abrams' Stunts
Director Brian Duffield has shed light on the unique premise and production challenges of his upcoming film, "Whalefall." The movie, which is based on Daniel Kraus’ 2023 book of the same name, features Austin Abrams as a scuba diver who finds himself swallowed whole by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale while searching for his father's remains.
Duffield acknowledges that a character being consumed by an animal typically signals the end of a story, but in "Whalefall," this event occurs within the first 15 minutes.
This early, intense sequence was highlighted in the film's official trailer, a decision supported by Disney’s 20th Century Studios, who felt it would intrigue audiences about the narrative's progression.
"Whalefall" aims to be more than a conventional monster movie.
Duffield emphasizes that the whale is not portrayed as a villain but rather as an animal acting on instinct, with the protagonist being an accidental byproduct of its feeding.
The filmmakers conducted extensive research, consulting whale experts to ensure the depiction of the creature and its internal environment was as realistic as possible.
All underwater scenes were filmed in a specially constructed tank at the Radford Studio Center in Studio City, California.
Duffield praised the crew's dedication to safety and creating a visceral experience.
Austin Abrams, who plays the lead, committed significantly to his role, learning to dive and performing most of his own stunts.
The director and stunt coordinator, Shauna Duggins, occasionally had to prevent Abrams from attempting actions deemed too dangerous.
Scheduled for release on October 16, "Whalefall" will also be available in 4DX, offering an immersive theatrical experience with motion-enabled chairs, sensations, and smells.
Duffield expressed curiosity about how the 4DX format will enhance the film's claustrophobic and terrifying atmosphere, particularly in conveying the sensation of being inside a living creature.
