Actress Alexa Demie has addressed and dispelled rumors suggesting her retirement from acting, a theory that gained significant traction among fans during the third season of HBO's hit show, *Euphoria*.

Demie, who portrays the popular character Maddy Perez, clarified that she has no intention of leaving the industry.

The speculation reportedly originated from a 2020 episode of The A24 Podcast.

In the podcast, Demie had expressed frustrations from early in her career, noting a perceived lack of opportunities for Latina actresses in Hollywood and questioning the audition process.

Unaware of the growing rumors, as she avoids her own headlines, Demie found the theory of her imminent exit circulating widely.

When asked about it, she initially joked about letting the rumor persist before elaborating on her past discontent.

Demie recounted experiences in her early 20s where character descriptions for lead roles often excluded Hispanic backgrounds.

Despite these challenges, she stated, "Knowing me, I never would have quit.

I’m more of the energy of like, ‘No, I’m going to show you I can do it.’"

Her relatively low public profile, marked by few interviews since *Euphoria*'s first season, has contributed to her image as an "elusive 'It' girl." This approach, according to *Euphoria* creator Sam Levinson, adds an "air of mystery" to her, which he finds natural.

Pop star Rosalía, a close friend and season three co-star, described Demie as having "the cleanest, brightest aura in all of Hollywood."

Demie's journey into acting began after working various odd jobs.

A friend's short film led to industry interest, prompting her to seriously consider an acting career.

She studied the craft and eventually landed guest roles on shows like *Ray Donovan* and *The OA*, and a small part in Jonah Hill's *Mid 90s*.

## Landing the Role of Maddy Perez

*Euphoria* marked a turning point for Demie.

She initially auditioned for the lead role of Rue, eventually played by Zendaya.

However, she was called back for Maddy, a role Levinson felt she was perfect for, despite initial reservations from HBO executives who envisioned a "blond cheerleader." Levinson recalled advising Demie on her attire for callbacks to counter potential biases, stating, "I knew that the execs would immediately think, ‘Oh, she’s too Latin.’ So I told her, ‘Don’t wear anything red,’ to soften up what I knew would be their initial perception."

Demie described the final audition as a powerful moment, where she read a scene from episode four involving Maddy's confrontation with Nate's family.

She felt a strong connection to the character's defiance, stating, "I was in my fire." She received the call confirming her role shortly after leaving the audition.

## Navigating the Demands of *Euphoria*

The intense production of *Euphoria*'s second season took a toll on Demie, who struggled to separate herself from Maddy's character.

She described the experience as emotionally and physically taxing, leading her to seek a period of self-care involving meditation, journaling, and EMDR therapy.

She also explored falconry during this time, with friends jokingly calling her "the nun in the hills."

Despite rumors of behind-the-scenes drama and constant script changes, Demie maintains a positive view of her experience on set.

She acknowledged the long hours but found the time enjoyable and appreciated Levinson's willingness to listen to her concerns, particularly regarding nudity and sex scenes in the first season.

She clarified that she never blamed Levinson or the production for her struggles, attributing them to her own learning curve in separating from her character.

Regarding the delayed third season, Demie remained informed by HBO and felt no true uncertainty about its return.

She respects former co-star Barbie Ferreira's decision to leave the series, stating, "It’s a brave move." Demie's career choices, which differ from some of her co-stars who have pursued more traditional Hollywood paths, are intentional.

Levinson and others close to her suggest her restraint comes from a desire for meaningful projects rather than fame or fortune.

Demie herself affirmed, "I like my life like this, and I wouldn’t change it."

As *Euphoria* approaches its conclusion, the future endeavors of Alexa Demie remain a private matter, though Levinson has expressed interest in writing more for her.
