A24's latest horror offering, 'Backrooms', has made a significant impact at the box office, securing the No.

1 spot globally with an impressive $118 million in its opening weekend.

This strong performance includes an $81.4 million domestic take, according to Comscore.

The film's success is particularly notable as it establishes several new records within the industry.

The debut of 'Backrooms' now stands as A24's biggest-ever box office premiere, surpassing previous hits like 'Everything Everywhere All At Once', 'Uncut Gems', and 'Hereditary' in its initial gross.

This achievement highlights A24's growing influence and success in film production and distribution.

Furthermore, the film's opening weekend makes it the biggest horror premiere of 2026 to date, outperforming other genre releases this year such as 'Scream 7' and 'Obsession'.

At the helm of 'Backrooms' is 20-year-old director Kane Parsons, a YouTube prodigy known for developing the film's lore from internet message boards into a web series.

His directorial debut has made him the youngest director ever to achieve a No.

1 film at the box office, breaking the record previously held by Josh Trank, who was 27 when 'Chronicle' opened in 2011.

This development signals a potential shift in how new talent can emerge and succeed in the film industry, leveraging digital platforms to build a following before transitioning to major theatrical releases.

Elsewhere in the box office, 'Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu' held onto the No.

2 global spot with $52.8 million but slipped to No.

3 domestically with $25 million.

'Obsession', a Focus Features horror film, continued its strong run in its third week, earning $26.4 million domestically and $40.2 million globally, bringing its worldwide total to $148 million.

This is a significant return for a film reportedly made on a budget of $1 million or less.

Looking ahead, the box office is set for another horror-heavy weekend with the return of the 'Scary Movie' franchise and the live-action adaptation of 'Masters of the Universe', which features an all-star cast including Nicholas Galitzine, Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Alison Brie, Kristen Wiig, and Idris Elba.
