Sharon Stone Claims Mastectomy Decision Led to End of Marriage
Actress Sharon Stone has revealed that her marriage ended following a health scare in 2001 when she decided to undergo a double mastectomy.
Stone, 68, shared this detail on David Begnaud’s *The Person Who Believed In Me* podcast, explaining that her then-husband was "done" with her after her decision.
In 2001, Stone discovered multiple "gigantic" tumors in her breasts.
While these were later determined to be benign and surgically removed, the initial diagnosis led her to consider a bilateral mastectomy.
This development offers a new perspective on the personal challenges Stone faced during a significant health crisis.
Stone recounted the moment she informed her husband of her decision.
"One of [the tumors] was bigger than the size of my entire left breast," she stated, adding that a doctor had recommended a bilateral mastectomy due to the severity of the situation.
Despite her insistence that she did not have cancer, she was prepared to proceed with the surgery, saying, "I am deciding that I will have a bilateral, because I’m not f***ing around."
According to Stone, her husband reacted with fury.
"My husband said, ‘This is ridiculous.’ And got up and left the room," she recalled.
When asked by Begnaud what part was ridiculous, Stone clarified, "That I would have a bilateral.
He was furious." She further explained that her husband's anger stemmed from the prospect of her breasts being removed, not the potential health threat.
"That was the end of the marriage.
That was it.
He was done with me," she concluded.
While Stone did not explicitly name her ex-husband during the podcast, she was married to journalist Phil Bronstein from 1998 to 2004.
They share an adopted son, Roan, 26.
Stone ultimately did not undergo the double mastectomy after learning the tumors were benign.
This isn't the first time Stone has spoken about her breast surgery experience.
In a 2021 interview with *The Times*, she disclosed that after the tumor removal, she woke up to discover her doctor had increased her breast size without her consent, claiming it would "go better with your hip size."
